THE CURRICULUM

Our Curriculum Intent

 

Our curriculum is rooted in the Early Years Foundation Stage and is designed to give every child from birth to five the knowledge, skills, vocabulary, experiences and dispositions they need to thrive.

We recognise that children develop at different rates and arrive with different experiences, strengths and needs. Our curriculum therefore provides a clear progression while allowing practitioners to respond sensitively to individual children.

As a nursery serving both service families and civilian families within a military community, we recognise the importance of secure relationships, belonging, emotional wellbeing, communication, resilience, independence and successful transitions. These are woven throughout our curriculum.

We want every child to:

• feel safe, secure, valued and listened to

• develop strong and trusting relationships

• become confident communicators

• develop a love of books, stories, songs and language

• develop curiosity and a desire to find out about the world

• develop strong foundations in mathematics

• become increasingly independent

• develop physical confidence and healthy habits

• develop the ability to manage feelings and relationships

• develop creativity and imagination

• develop knowledge of themselves, their families, their community and the wider world

• develop the skills and dispositions needed for their next stage of learning.

 

Our curriculum is deliberately sequenced. Practitioners identify what children already know and can do, introduce new knowledge and vocabulary, provide opportunities for children to practise and apply their learning, and revisit important concepts so that learning becomes increasingly secure.

 

We recognise that play is central to early childhood. Adults use children's play and interests as opportunities to model, teach, extend vocabulary, introduce new ideas and deepen children's understanding.

Our curriculum is ambitious for every child, including children with SEND and children who may require additional support. We adapt our teaching, environment and resources so that children can participate meaningfully and achieve their potential.
